Mumu Del Amo

Torrance, California, 2024

Mumu Del Amo, a shabu-shabu hot pot restaurant, offers patrons a soft, immersive environment defined by flowing curves and arches that embrace the space. Upon entering, guests move through a tunnel-like storefront and waiting area, leaving the outside world behind as they’re drawn into a tranquil, otherworldly setting. Textured Venetian plaster walls interact with carefully placed lighting, casting shadows that subtly hint at the depth and dimension of the space. At the heart of the restaurant is an open bar area, framed by a dome ceiling that softly delineates the central gathering space, fostering a sense of stability and openness.

We focused on using a restrained palette of neutral colors and materials, allowing the natural elements to speak for themselves. Hidden lighting within the arched ceilings illuminates both wings of the restaurant, integrating seamlessly with essential mechanical elements to maintain the design’s cohesion. This approach creates a continuous, immersive environment, where the simplicity of materials complements the layered, inviting atmosphere.
